A recent poll was conducted where 1,000 kids, age 9-13, were asked questions about their parents. 90% said they felt their parents loved them- big time! Whew, good job parents! However, more than half the kids said they feel their parents ask too many questions. These included basic questions such as "how was your day?" or "how was practice?" These can often lead to one word answers from kids. "What happened at school today?"- Nothing. Does this sound familiar. So the solution to this?
The awesome news is that of the same kids polled, 75% said they like doing stuff with their parents! Two great ways to spend more time with your kids are family meals and volunteering for events at your kids school. Meals are an awesome way to share healthy meals and for kids and parents to talk. While you're passing the celery sticks, ;) it might remind you of a funny story you heard at school.
School is another good place for parents and kids to get together. I remember feeling special when my mom or dad would show up at my school, as long as it wasn't because I was in trouble or sick! Parents can help with several events at school including:
chaperoning field trips, coaching a sport, volunteering for class events, or being a lunch mom or dad (a parent who helps supervise kids during lunchtime).
When parents come to school, it gives them a chance to see what's going on. And then they might not need to ask so many basic questions. They'll have seen it for themselves when a child scores a basket, has a crush on the neighborhood boy/girl, or will know why they like their math teacher.
