At some point in their schooling almost every child will run into some type of problem. Either the child will struggle academically, not be challenged enough intellectually, or the child may have some type of social problem such as being the victim of bullying. The most important thing you need to remember if and when a problem crops-up is that the school is there to help you and your child. The child may start to lose interest in school and education, which is the last thing we want to happen. School should be fun for kids and this will increase the amount they learn and care about it.
If a situation comes up, several things can be done:
- Contact your child’s teacher, don’t wait for the school to contact you.
- Get more involved. Ask your child’s teacher for specific activities you can do at home with your child.
- Communicate with the teacher what works best with your child at home.
- Facilitate a partnership with the teacher. Ensure that the teacher immediately tells you if a problem begins to develop.
- Meet with your child’s teacher frequently until the problem has been resolved.
I remember having trouble adjusting to new math concepts one year in elementary school. I just couldn't understand the way the teacher was presenting the material. I told my parents and I went and saw a tudor for a couple weeks. I don't know what exactly it was, but the way the tudor presented the information made it much easier for me to understand. My confidence came back up and I ended up getting a A in the class!
When parents become more involved, children get a much clearer sense that a high value is placed on education (it’s not just talk). Quite often this will help alleviate feelings of frustration, inadequacy or hopelessness.
